Natural analogue evidence for controls on radionuclide uptake by fractured crystalline rock

چکیده
Fractured Crystalline Rocks (FCR) are being considered in several countries as hosts for radioactive waste repositories. In FCR, radionuclides may be transported relatively rapidly by bulk groundwater flow through open fractures, but much more slowly diffusion porewater the rock matrices. Rock matrix (RMD) is of aqueous phase, between fractures and Sorption or co-precipitation on fracture surfaces walls pores causes further radionuclide retardation. RMD important a repository's safety case has been investigated many published short-term (to few years) laboratory in-situ experiments. To improve understanding over longer timescales, we evidence natural radioelements, radioelement analogues, five exemplar fractured crystalline samples aged c. 70 Ma 455 Ma. The sample suite consisted two Borrowdale Volcanic Group (BVG) meta-tuff from northwest England, Carnmenellis Granite southwest England Toki central Japan. Uptake loss studied elements limited to an altered damage zone each sample, coupled mineral alteration processes. These zones most extensive (a tens millimetres) samples. We also found unstable primary igneous minerals persist immediate wallrocks granite samples, suggesting that were not permanently water saturated these Although only small was studied, results show while some kinds others it negligible. Site-specific information therefore needed determine how reliance can placed when developing case.

Identification of sorption processes and parameters for radionuclide transport in fractured rock
Identification of chemical reaction processes in subsurface environments is a key issue for reactive transport modeling because simulating different processes requires developing different chemical–mathematical models. In this paper, two sorption processes (equilibrium and kinetics) are considered for modeling neptunium and uranium sorption in fractured rock. Based on different conceptualizatio...
متن کاملInfluence of small-scale heterogeneities on contaminant transport in fractured crystalline rock.
We present a sequence of purely advective transport models that demonstrate the influence of small-scale geometric inhomogeneities on contaminant transport in fractured crystalline rock. Special weight is placed on the role of statistically generated variable fracture apertures. The fracture network geometry and the aperture distribution are based on information from an in situ radionuclide ret...
متن کاملIncorporation of conceptual and parametric uncertainty into radionuclide flux estimates from a fractured granite rock mass
Detailed numerical flow and radionuclide simulations are used to predict the flux of radionuclides from three underground nuclear tests located in the Climax granite stock on the Nevada Test Site. The numerical modeling approach consists of both a regional-scale and local-scale flow model. The regional-scale model incorporates conceptual model uncertainty through the inclusion of five models of...
متن کاملμCT on narrowly fractured natural rock samples from a hydrocarbon reservoir
Micro-Computed Tomography (μCT) is used for imaging narrowly fractured natural rocks from the subsurface of the Vienna Basin, Austria. The dolomites from the Hauptdolomit Formation represent a successfully producing reservoir for hydrocarbons (mainly gas). However, the heterogeneity of the rocks and their fracture networks make conventional predictions on economically viable exploration of the ...
متن کاملObservations from Borehole Dilution Logging Experiments in Fractured Crystalline Rock under Ambient and Pump Test Conditions
Identifying hydraulically active fractures in low permeability, crystalline-bedrock aquifers requires a variety of geophysical and hydrogeophysical borehole tools and approaches. One such approach is Single Borehole Dilution Tests (SBDT), which in some low flow cases have been shown to provide greater resolution of borehole flow than other logging procedures, such as vertical differential Heat ...
